Note : A young, unknown Steven Spielberg burst onto the scene with this TV movie which was so well received it later got a theatrical release with additional scenes (this is the theatrical version), and boy howdy, it's pretty damn good. Ninety minutes of driving around the Mojave might get visually monotonous with all the yellow and brown, but the constant inventive camera angles, interesting cuts, and above all the ratcheting tension makes for never a dull moment. The fact that the plot is extremely simple actually works to its advantage, since it allows us to focus on the kinetics of the chase and the different setpieces. There's plenty of subtext, though, which isn't too hard to figure out, with the emasculated protagonist trying to prove his manhood first through performance, and then being forced to actually follow through, and that fucking truck is just a monster in the most literal sense.

David Mann (yea! subtext!) is a salesman driving through the Mojave desert when he encounters and passes a very manly old tanker truck. The truck passes him again, though, and after this repeats a couple of times, Mann pulls into a gas station, followed by the truck, but he's unable to see the driver, apart from his boots. After a humiliating phone call with his wife and blowing off a mechanic who claims he needs a new radiator hose, he sets off again, but the truck blocks him, weaving back and forth on the road, until Mann passes it by taking a shortcut onto a side road, after which it starts dangerously tailgating him. Mann finally drives off the road and ends up at a diner, where he notices the truck outside, and unsuccessfully tries to identify the driver. As his mental state deteriorates and the game of cat and mouse grows deadly, Mann is forced to Himself up and prove that he's a real Himself.

This is a quite nice 4k remaster, very naturalistic and, I think, likely very close to what the film originally looked like, with nice, unobtrusive grain and no over-sharpening, but pleasant detail. 7.1 remaster sounds good (and the sound design is important in this film), the original stereo is fine too. I really wish they'd gotten Spielberg to do a commentary track, though, I think it would have been fascinating to hear his thoughts more than forty years later.
